Upper endoscopy, or EGD, is a procedure in which a thin scope with a light and camera at its tip is used to look inside of the upper digestive tract- the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum.

During an ERCP, the endoscope is inserted through your mouth, down through the esophagus and stomach, to the first part of the small intestines. In the small intestine, the endoscope is used to insert a small catheter into the bile and/or pancreatic duct.
